Frequent headaches can be frustrating—but they might be more than just stress or lack of sleep. In many cases, headaches are linked to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD), a condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) estimates that over 10 million Americans are affected by TMJ disorders. Common symptoms include jaw pain, clicking sounds, difficulty chewing, and headaches that feel like tension or migraines (NIDCR, 2020).
TMJ-related headaches typically start near the temples or ears and may radiate toward the neck. Poor bite alignment, jaw clenching, teeth grinding (bruxism), or arthritis can contribute to TMJ issues.
Treatment often includes night guards, physical therapy, stress management, or dental work to correct bite problems. In severe cases, surgery might be considered, though it is usually a last resort.
If you’re experiencing headaches alongside jaw discomfort or clicking, it’s time to talk to your dentist. Early diagnosis can prevent long-term damage and significantly improve your quality of life.
“Don’t ignore pain in the jaw—it’s your body telling you something’s off,” says Dr. Harold Menchel, TMJ specialist.
