Invisalign® clear aligners offer a discreet, effective way to straighten your teeth—but getting great results depends on how well you follow your treatment plan. To start, wear your aligners consistently for 20 to 22 hours a day. Taking them out too often or for too long can delay your progress or affect your final results (American Association of Orthodontists, 2022).
It’s also important to clean your aligners daily. Rinse them with lukewarm water and brush gently with a soft toothbrush (without toothpaste, which can scratch them). Avoid using hot water, as it may warp the plastic. In addition, maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing after meals before reinserting your aligners—this prevents food and bacteria from being trapped.
Regular check-ins with your orthodontist help ensure your teeth are shifting as expected. In some cases, attachments (small tooth-colored dots) may be used to give your aligners more grip on the teeth and improve movement. These are normal and safe.
Invisalign® works best when you’re disciplined and consistent. While results vary depending on individual cases, studies show that Invisalign can effectively treat many orthodontic problems with high patient satisfaction (Ke, Zhu, & Zhang, 2019). By following your orthodontist’s guidance and sticking to your schedule, you can achieve a straighter smile—without the look of traditional braces.
“Invisalign patients who are compliant tend to finish their treatment on time and with excellent results,” says Dr. Alan H. Daniels, DDS, orthodontic consultant.
